# Set matter numbers

Matter numbers are an optional custom attribute that can be enabled by an Organisation Administrator. Once enabled, a matter number field appears on all matters and is required when creating a new matter.

## **Enabling matter numbers (Organisation Administrators only)**

1. Click your name in the top right corner and select **Organisation Admin**
2. Select **Custom Fields** from the left-hand menu
3. Click **New Field**

1. Enter a name of the field (e.g. "Matter Number" or "Matter Reference") and click **Create**

Once enabled, a new field will appear in the **New Matter** creation window and will be required when creating a new matter.

**Note**: You can only have one Custom Field at any given time. 

## **Editing a matter number on an existing matter**

1. Open the matter and go to the **Setup** tab
2. Select **Settings** from the left-hand panel
3. Enter or update the matter number in the **Matter Number** field
